Oxbow Stables, Hamburg, NJ. Set on 80 picturesque acres in the Skylands region of New Jersey,
Oxbow Stables is home to over 45 horses, and generations of riders that call it home while enjoying
the many hours engaged in a variety of activities offered there.
The mission of Oxbow Stables originators Veron and Whitney Bowles stems from their love of
horses. Oxbow is dedicated to the art of traditional horsemanship, and the development safe of
strong, and skilled riders. For fifty years Oxbow has been and continues to be all about education.
The Oxbow Riding Club was established in 1959 in Newfoundland, NJ by Veron and Whitney
Bowles. Whitney was traveling to New York City to work for one of the airlines and grew tired of
the commute. When Veron asked him what he would do if he retired tomorrow, his answer was,
“I’d like togo back to working with horses.” Whit had owned a horse as a child and played polo
in college . . and so the Oxbow Riding Club, a teaching and boarding facility was born. Today,
the Oxbow Riding Club is an official “United States Pony Club Center”.
In 1963 Veron started the Oxbow Raiders 4-H Club, one of the oldest 4-H clubs in the state, whose projects are centered on learning about the horse and having fun while doing it. Kids learn about horses, and learn responsibility, discipline and commitment from them. Some of the activities are attending county presentation night where members practice public speaking by presenting their own researched topics on different aspects of the horse. The annual Halloween party and costume contest is a fun event where riders create their own themed costumes for themselves and their equine partners for the parade in the indoor ring.
